Updates from Charles (Los’ dad)

Day 52 (including days 49, 50,51)

Good morning from Charlos’s room…. Below I have dated each day, and the previous afternoon/evening’s activities in hopes you can follow Los’s progress

Saturday afternoon, July 12, Day 49 (7 weeks) Charlos’s sister, Sylvia, was able to reach his neurologist from this hospital and clearly relay our family’s goals for Charlos and our plan for his next big step of intense rehab. Sylvia also asked if he was OK with us sitting up on the side of the bed, (with support) to allow his feet to hang over the edge and just sit up for the first time in 7 weeks; the doctor agreed and his sisters and I moved him over to the edge, sat him up and he loved it. Though he sat there for just a few minutes, he let out a big sigh was obviously enjoying the change. After laying him back down he was able to let us know he enjoyed that change by intently moving his fingers and giving us a thumbs-up with his right hand. He gave a very distinct thumbs-up to his nurse on his way out!

Sunday, July 13, marked 50 days since Charlos’s accident and my, have we seen so many changes and points of progress. Charlos had good vitals all day and rested when he chose. Today, like yesterday, was an active day with a lot of friends and family visiting his room and gathering there and outside. Los was calm and comfortable and was becoming more aware of his surroundings and his responses to people’s voices were markedly noticeable. He was turning his head purposely to the person speaking and would look directly at them; this was awesome. He continued responding to us with blinking his eyes, tapping his fingers and raising his thumb as a ‘yes’ response. Charlos had a nice surprise as Brooke’s parents came in to spend time with him and love on him after driving in from Oregon. It’s a blessing to have them here with us again!

Monday, July 14, Day 51, was another busy day with visitors, meetings, and a ‘field trip’ for Charlos. As we had family arrive yesterday from Oregon, we had others head back to Arizona and Montana then, we had one friend drive down from Simi Valley for the morning and drive back after lunch! It has been such a blessing to have so many people come in and love on Charlos, thank you all!

Los was transported to the oral surgeon’s office to remove his ‘braces’ that have kept his mouth closed and broken jaw aligned for healing these past 6+ weeks. Once back in his bed, Los was calm and already moving his mouth, which he seems to enjoy.

Today, July 15 – Day 52

This morning, Los has been resting here in bed very calm, with his head back, and mouth slightly open. One of our goals today is to with the PT team to get Charlos into a ‘Geri Chair’ and get him outside for some sunshine therapy! ☀️ Doctor’s orders, gotta do it! We think he will enjoy that; sitting up, moving, and getting outside! Today we will also being some light PT with his hands, arms, fingers, legs, feet, and toes as well as some OT work with his mouth and jaw; he should love that! Stay tuned for the update!

Have a wonderful day, please continue to pray for Charlos’s continued healing progress and pray also that details align quickly for Charlos’s ability to move on to his rehabilitation stage.

Blessings to all,

Charlos’s Family
